Absenteeism refers to an employee’s pattern of absence from work that exceeds normally accepted standards, whether through excessive sick leave, late arrivals, early departures, extended breaks, or unexplained time away from the workplace. It includes both planned and unplanned absences that go beyond what’s considered reasonable or permitted by organizational policies.
Some absences can’t be helped – like when you’re genuinely sick or dealing with an emergency. Others are choices, like calling in sick when you’re not. The tricky ones show patterns – always missing Mondays, or disappearing right before holidays.
Sometimes it’s straightforward – health issues or family needs. Other times it runs deeper – feeling burned out, disconnected from work, or dealing with a toxic environment. Even practical challenges like a brutal commute can push people to miss work regularly.
Missing work regularly also affects the absent employee – they miss opportunities, relationships get strained, and their reputation suffers.
