How Psychometric Tests Work?

The tests are designed in a standard and structural way by following a series of stages to ensure both reliability and validity of the test. The structure usually includes the following:
  • Questionnaire or task-based assessment: Participants will have to answer multiple questions or perform several tasks. The way these questions have been created depends on whether the test evaluates cognitive ability, personality characteristics or behavioural tendency.
  • Indication of time limits: Some aptitude tests time how quickly an individual processes information and reaches accurate decisions under pressure.
  • Scoring system: Each response is scored against pre-determined standards. For example, an individual using a proficiency number for his performance in aptitude tests, or an individual giving responses for personality tests that are interpreted, coding personality traits and behavioural tendencies.
  • Analysis and interpretation: Results are compared against those of a reference group or industry-standard benchmark to assess where the individual stands in comparison to others.
  • Report generation: A report is prepared that documents the strengths and weaknesses of the individual and makes recommendations for development or professional suitability.
